Iowa Brevet Series

Riding the Iowa Brevet Series in 2011 will qualify you to enter Paris-Brest-Paris, and should qualify you to enter any other 1200km Grand Randonnée. However, please check the qualifying event deadlines for any other Grand Randonnée event you are hoping to ride. Some are scheduled early enough that they may require qualifying rides from last season, or from another region with earlier rides.

The Iowa Brevet Series is an ACP validated Super Randonneur series of 200, 300, 400km and 600km rides. The routes are nested, and head NE from Waterloo. All routes are out-and-back, except for the 600km, which forms a “lollipop”. The 300km route heads out into the return leg of the 600km, and turns around in McGregor, IA. Control points are as follows (click on the links below to see each route map and profile):

200km (Map)(Profile): Oelwein, Volga, Oelwein, Dunkerton, Finish

300km (Map)(Profile): Oelwein, Elkader, McGregor, Elkader, Oelwein, Finish

400km (Map)(Profile): Oelwein, Monona, De Soto (WI), Monona, Oelwein, Finish

600km (Map)(Profile): Oelwein, Monona, De Soto (WI), Wilton (WI), Richland Center (WI), Prairie du Chien (WI), Oelwein, Finish.

The control in Monona includes a Subway sandwich bar. There is another Subway on the 600km route in Viroqua (WI), between De Soto and Wilton. A bag drop on the 600km will transport riders’ gear to the Center Lodge in Richland Center (see below). Controls in Richland Center (600km), Prairie du Chien (600km) and Oelwein (400km and 600km) are all open 24 hours. On the 600km between Prairie du Chien and Oelwein, you will pass the Elkader and Volga controls used on the 200 and 300km events, although these are not open 24 hours.

The April 9 200km will start and finish at the home of the RBA (see Directions page).

Lodging: All the Iowa Brevet Series rides except the April 9 200km will start and finish at the Days Inn, 1809 Laporte Rd., Waterloo. For those traveling from out of town, you are recommended to stay at the Days Inn, tel. (319) 235-4461. A group block of non-smoking rooms has been reserved for the Friday night preceding each ride, also the Saturday night for the 400km on both May 21 and June 18. These will be held until one month before each event. Please make your own individual reservation with the Days Inn. We have been given a discounted group rate for 2011 of $74.99+tax per room, so be sure to identify yourself as part of the Iowa Randonneurs bike event. Directions to this motel are given on our Directions page. There is a 24-hour IHOP restaurant close to the motel, and several other restaurants and a 24-hour HyVee grocery store nearby in the Crossroads Mall area. Days Inn provides breakfast starting at 6am on Saturdays. I normally request them to start breakfast early before the 400km and 600km. This has worked out well so far, but I make no guarantees…..

600km: For riders on the 600km who plan to take a nighttime rest stop, this will be at the Center Lodge motel in Richland Center, WI, tel. (608) 647-8988. A group block of non-smoking rooms has been booked there for Saturday night, June 18. These will be held until May 18. We were given a discounted group rate for 2011 of $80+tax per room. Please make your own individual reservation, and mention the Iowa Randonneurs bike event to get the group discount. Richland Center is reached after 370km (230 miles) of riding.

IMPORTANT: Brevets are long, tiring rides. There have been a few recorded instances of randonneurs drifting off at the wheel with expensive and painful consequences when returning home from a long brevet. Don’t let this happen to you – stay an extra night!

Hawkeye 1000km

After the debacle of 2010, we are again planning to hold this ACP validated event for 2011.

The July 16 Hawkeye 1000km is a qualifying event for the ACP Randonneur 5000 award.

The Hawkeye 1000km is NOT, repeat, NOT a qualifying event for Paris-Brest-Paris.

Route and Controls: The route is laid out as a large loop into the far reaches of NW Iowa, while remaining entirely within the boundaries of the state. The loop will be ridden in the clockwise direction. Control points are as follows (click on the links below to see the route map and profile):

(Map)(Profile): Eldora, Webster City, Rockwell City, Denison, Cherokee, Hawarden, Sheldon, Estherville, Algona, Hampton, Finish

All controls on the route are at 24-hour Kum & Go convenience stores, to comply with the spirit of riding allure libre, and thus to allow the full range of riding pace permitted by RUSA regulations. Controls in Eldora, Rockwell City and Hawarden include a Subway sandwich bar, and a range of other facilities are available in the various control towns. Some of the controls are quite widely spaced, and so the route is planned to pass additional services between almost all pairs of controls.

Terrain: The route is significantly less challenging than the Iowa Brevet Series 600km, with a good section of rolling terrain in the middle of the route, but no real long or steep climbs. After a few early rollers around Eldora, the route is fairly flat until after Rockwell City. It then becomes more rolling as it approaches closer to the Missouri River, with the hilliest section being from a little before Denison to a little after Hawarden. The final day back from Estherville is the flattest section of the route, with just a few more gentle rollers close to the finish.

Lodging: Included in the entry fee, a drop bag will be carried for riders to 2 planned night stops on the route, in Ida Grove (between Denison and Cherokee) the first night and Estherville the second. For riders taking advantage of the night stops, the ride will split into 3 sections of 227, 212 and 184 miles respectively.

Start and Finish: The event will start and finish at the Country Inn and Suites, 2910 S Main St., Cedar Falls, tel. (319) 268-1800. For those traveling from out of town, you are recommended to stay at the Country Inn before the start and after the finish. Group blocks of non-smoking rooms have been reserved for Iowa Randonneurs for Thursday night, July 14, and Sunday night, July 17. These are at a discounted group rate of $95+tax. Please call to make your own individual reservation, and mention Iowa Randonneurs to get the group discount. Either one or both nights can be reserved. The group blocks will be released on June 14 and June 17, respectively. Directions to this motel are given on our Directions page. There are several good restaurants in Cedar Falls, about 1.5 miles North towards the top of Main St. The Country Inn has graciously promised to provide an early 4am breakfast before the event start for riders staying with them.

Ida Grove: The first night stop will be at the Super 8 Motel, 90 E Hwy 175, Ida Grove, tel. (712) 364-3988, which is between the Denison and Cherokee controls. A group block of non-smoking rooms has been reserved for Friday, July 15 at a discounted group rate of $67.44+tax. Please call to make your own individual reservation, and mention Iowa Randonneurs to get the group discount. The group block will be released on June 15. The night stop in Ida Grove is reached after 365km (227 miles) of riding.

Estherville: The second night stop will be at the Sleep Inn, 2008 Central Ave., Estherville, tel. (712) 362-5522. A group block of non-smoking rooms has been reserved for Saturday, July 16 at a discounted group rate of $80.75+tax. Please call to make your own individual reservation, and mention Iowa Randonneurs to get the group discount. The group block will be released on June 16. Estherville is reached after a total of 707km (439 miles) of riding.

And just in case you missed it above, here is an important message again J:

IMPORTANT: Brevets are long, tiring rides. There have been a few recorded instances of randonneurs drifting off at the wheel with expensive and painful consequences when returning home from a long brevet. Don’t let this happen to you – please stay safe, and stay an extra night!

Late Summer 208km Brevet and 130km Populaire

Our September events are both domestic (RUSA validated) rides. Both events start in the parking lot of Birdsall Park, W. 12th St., Cedar Falls. Both routes make a loop to the West, separating after Aplington, and joining up again before Grundy Center. Controls for each are as follows (click on each link to see the route map):

208km (Map)(Profile): Aplington, Alden, Grundy Center, Finish.

130km (Map)(Profile): Aplington, Grundy Center, Finish.

Both courses are gently rolling, and should be well within the capabilities of most century riders. The control in Grundy Center includes a Blimpie sandwich bar.

Join us for our late Summer Brevet and Populaire to finish your season with a bang!
